De Kunstenaars

"La Gioia" october - december 2014

Born in 1943 in Italy. Lives and works in Rome.

Luigi Ontani is mostly known, since the late 1960’s, for his “tableaux vivants”, photographed and videotaped performances in which he presents himself like figures from history, mythology, religion or literature. The artist’s self-portraits, as Bacchus, St Sebastian, Shiva or Pinocchio, refer to Western and Eastern iconographical traditions. Using his body and face as starting point for his works allows him to express himself with great depth and intensity while being at the same time satirical and colorful.Ontani also creates sculptures, installations, hand-painted photographs, and drawings.
