"Everybody is crazy, but me" april - july 2016

Born in Nairobi (Kenya) in 1950, she lives and works in Surrey (England).

Growing up in Kenya and India, Magdalene Odundo attended the Nairobi Polytechnic in Kenya to study Graphics and Commercial Art. She moved to England in 1971 to follow her chosen vocation in Graphic Design and completed qualifications in foundation art and graphics at the Cambridge College of Art. Odundo studied traditional hand-built African pottery techniques but her work reveals a thorough knowledge of non-African traditions, including the complex vessel shapes of ancient Cyprus, the geometry of Cycladic figures, the heavy forms of Japan's Jomon culture, and the unusual gourd-shaped pots of the Pokot of Kenya, among many others. Odundo is considered by many to be one of the best ceramicists working today. Her work is collected by the Victoria & Albert Museum, The British Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
