"States of Mind" january - march 2014

Born in 1975 in South Africa. Lives and works in Amsterdam and Johannesburg.

As a visual anthropologist, Moshekwa Langa deals in his work with subject matters such as political participation, social affiliation, religious rituals, and the construction of identity. He draws inspiration from the surroundings, memories of growing up in rural South Africa and own experiences as expatriate in Europe. His drawings, installations, sculptures, photographs, and videos often incorporate waste materials like colorful yarns, nail polish, masking tape, or cement bags. Langa not only accumulates the various materials on top of each other, he also creates layers of meanings and references. These remain often ambivalent or cryptic, leaving the decoding of the work entirely to the viewers.
