Born in Sint-Truiden in 1956, he lives and works in Brussels.

Michel François graduated at the École de Recherche Graphique in Brussels. Over the last thirty-five years he has built up a comprehensive body of work that is arranged in a number of thematic clusters. One sculpture or different variations of the same sculpture can be a part of several groups. The underlying idea is the variable ‘meaning’ of each sculpture depending on its confrontation with other sculptures and in accordance with the space in which it is displayed, and the way in which it relates to that space. François uses materials and elements he finds in order to create very heterogeneous works that cannot be placed in a certain style. The artist also explores a variety of other media including installation, video, and photography. In 1992, François’s work was included in Documenta 9 and, together with contemporary visual artist Ann Veronica Janssens, he represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale in 1999. More recently, he exhibited at the Site du Grand Hornu’s MAC’s and the SMAK in Ghent. Since 2009 he teaches at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
