"Sex, Money and Power" january - march 2013

Born in 1965 in China. Lives and works in Shanghai and New York.

Zhang Huan is primarily a performance artist, but he also makes photographs and sculptures. Buddhism, with its temple music, sculptures and philosophy is a prevalent theme in his work. His performances always implicate the body, in one way or the other, usually naked, occasionally involving masochistic actions. By exploring at the same time the body and religious elements through simple repetitive gestures, Zhang seeks to discover at what point the spiritual manifests itself via the corporeal. His works are both highly personal and politicized, dealing with complex issues of identity, spiritualism, vulnerability, and transgression.
