Born in France in 1936, he lives and works in France.

Attracted to abstraction early in his career, Claude Viallat worked towards creating a new formal language questioning the conventions of classical painting. Therefore he started working systematically with one shape fixed on a canvas without frame. Claude Viallat initiated and aesthetically influenced the Supports/Surfaces movement in Paris. After his first trip to the USA, Viallat discovered Jackson Pollock’s paintings and the art of Native Americans, which greatly influenced his own visual language.
