"Young Collectors" september - december 2013

Born in 1983 in Belgium. Lives and works in Antwerp.

Joris van de Moortel constantly explores, in his works, the dualities between creation and destruction, order and chaos. He creates musical performances and assemblages, which often look like stage sets or the remains of his acts. Architecture is one of his main concerns, as an important medium of one’s mental and physical experiences of space. For his sculptural and installations’ works, van de Moortel uses pedestals, walls, boxes and other small objects that seem to have been found by chance, like lamps, beer cans or old cooking pots. The artist often ‘recycles’ his works at the end of an exhibition: destroying and constructing new ones with the resulting trash, thus emphasizing the ideas of demolishing and rebuilding.
