"Inner Journeys" april - june 2013

Born in 1983 in Belgium. Lives and works in Antwerp.

Rinus Van De Velde creates large-scale figurative charcoal drawings on paper. His works have always been based on photographs, and more recently on images in which he stages. He prepares the scene, writes a scenario, takes the picture and then, starts to draw. In the end, as he says, “drawing is just a small part of my work.” Van De Velde is collaborating with a friend, Koen Sels, who writes the texts that accompany each of his pieces. These captions are really important to Van De Velde because he wants to create a narrative, his own fictional universe. Without these texts, his artworks would be “just pictures without any context, and everything would be just about the quality of the picture,” as he testified.
