Born in Belgium in 1981, he lives and works in Mullem.

Young artist Matthieu Ronsse completely dominates his technique: he is able to paint with equal talent, as the masters of classical painting from Flemish Masters to the Impressionists. Though he is fascinated by these ancient techniques, he doesn’t confine himself to classical materials. All his works undergo changes or transformations and are rendered obscure until the very last moment, leaning towards iconoclasm. He revises, cuts up, reworks, and even tears them to make some kind of collage that reflects his own nature. His work can be situated between classical mastery and rebellion. In art journalist Claude Lorent’s words: “What and how to paint today with, in your head and in your brushes all the weight of centuries and this commanding necessity to be of his time. Contemporaneity is not only a question to act in the present time, in this case to paint, but to think painting as a current act.”
