"Lightness?" january - march 2012

Born in 1976 in South Africa. Lives and works in Berlin.

Robin Rhode's work embraces a variety of media, principally photography, but also drawing, animation, performance and sculpture. He uses simple, ephemeral devices such as soap, charcoal, paint and chalk. Inspired by the tradition of silent movies, he creates performances by photographing drawings on walls, on the ground or on paper and offers us poetical and humorous universe. To comment on urban youth culture, colonialism and socio-economic issues in a simple, witty and subtly effective way, Rhode often uses the street as his canvas or his background, alluding to hip-hop and the role of the graffiti artist, whose gritty aesthetics he subtly picks up.
