Born in India in 1922, he lives and works in Paris.

Indian painter Syed Haider Raza started his career as an expressionist painter before moving to abstraction. His colorful, abstract paintings feature various elements from Indian cosmology and philosophy. Many of his paintings thus feature a Bindu, a dark, circular point which, according to Raza, is “the fountainhead of both energy and creativity (…) Bindu is the center of my life.” Other recurring elements are the Tribhuj (triangle) and other forms symbolizing prakriti-purusha (male and female energy). Furthermore, Raza is famous for creating the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group with fellow Indian artists to promote Indian art that finds inspiration in Indian visions and values, free from European (and, more generally, Western) influence.
