Founded in 2004, the collective is based in Paris.

Behind Claire Fontaine, there is a Paris-based collective who “founded” the “readymade artist” in 2004. The artist’s name is taken from a well-known French brand of school supplies, while the idea of a “readymade artist” comes from Duchamp’s famous readymade objects, among which Fountain (1917) is the most famous example. Fontaine works with neon, video, sculpture, painting and text to create neo-conceptual art “that looks like other people’s work.” Recurring themes in Fontaine’s work are the crisis of singularity in contemporary art and the questioning of the notions of authorship and private property.
