"Inner Journeys" april - june 2013

Born in 1970 in Morocco. Lives and works in Paris.

Mounir Fatmi’s multimedia practice encompasses video, installation, drawing, painting and sculpture. He said his work concerns the importance of building at a time when society is faced with constant images and acts of destruction – when to build is loaded with the probability of its own undoing. Fatmi focuses on material or imagistic acts of creation – thus the art-historical references in his frequent claims to Michelangelo, Jackson Pollock and others. While we may have doubts regarding main issues like Religion, Family, and History, what Fatmi’s work accomplishes is: to create within this state of uncertainty; to show that building is still possible even as our edifices must question their own foundations.
