Born in the USA in 1982, he lives and works in Richmond.

Memory and identity are central themes in Ben Durham’s work. Through his art, Durham analyzes the way we remember and forget, as well as the way our identity and memory is influenced by cultural and visual systems. He is most famous for his “text portraits” - an ongoing series begun in 2003 - in which he recreates mug shots of old high school acquaintances by writing out his own, personal memories, as well as those of his friends, on handmade paper. In another series, Map Composites, he superimposes the map of a person’s neighborhood with the silhouette of his or her mug shot, questioning the relationship between environment and personality.
