"States of Mind" january - march 2014

Born in 1972 in The Netherlands. Lives and works in Amsterdam.

Folkert de Jong reinvents traditional figurative sculpture using unconventional materials like Styrofoam and polyurethane foam. He creates life-sized vividly colored figures that make reference to art history or contemporary and historical geo-political issues. His world is peopled by circus artists, soldiers, Indian gods, mountain climbers, little dancers, apes, heads of state, and skeletons. Interested in the dark side of human nature, de Jong focuses on the grotesque which results in pieces that are, at the same time, horrifying and humorous, melodramatic and macabre, caricatural and confrontational. He combines his personages in ‘tableaux-vivant’ style compositions that remind Old Masters.
