Born in 1964 in Belgium. Lives and works in Ghent.

Best known for her sculptural work, Berlinde De Bruyckere also makes drawings, watercolors and installations. For several years now, she has been developing a highly personal vocabulary, using forms and materials selected for their metaphorical power. The main subjects around which her work revolves are the vulnerability of people and nature, the human need for protection, warmth, love, and understanding, but also the rough realities dominated by the aggression, the violence, the pain, and the fear. The artist takes these universal themes and transposes them using the contemporary sensibility which combines poetic beauty with raw realism. In this sense, De Bruyckere’s work is imbued with dualities that reflect the contradictions of the being. Taking inspiration from literature and film history, her work also displays a great affinity with old masters like Lucas Cranach and Antonello da Messina.
