Born in 1959 in India. Lives and works in Mumbai.

Atul Dodiya is from the first generation of Indian artists who identify themselves as postmodern and global. He began his career painting autobiographical and photorealistic canvasses, depicting middle-class Indian life. Since then, he has explored other paths, including vitrine-like installations, mixed-media works and paintings executed on the surface of the metal roller shutters used to protect storefronts. His creations access a rich vocabulary of stylistic and iconographic references from both Indian and Western art, along with imagery and ideas rooted in film, history, popular culture, and literature. Dodiya also approaches political subjects, cleverly including quotations of leaders such as Gandhi in his works. These are an especially insightful comment on the similarities between Gandhi’s protests techniques and Conceptual art.
