Born in France in 1928, he died in 2005.

Armand Fernandez, simply known as Arman, started his artistic career as a painter, but became famous for his accumulations as well as destructions and re-compositions of objects. His interest in objects started in 1956, when he made his Cachets series using stamps found in his father’s shop. In his 1960 manifesto Réalisme des Accumulations, Arman explained the elaboration of his plastic language, made up from ordinary or unusual, useful or worn objects; according to him, every object has an inherent aesthetic value. He compared his accumulation process with the process of mass production, marked by automation, assembly lines and massive scrapping.
